Campus Watch

Protecting the Pack TogetherThe UNM Police Department’s Campus Watch program is a strategic safety initiative that brings the proven Neighborhood Watch model to our diverse urban campus. At its core, Campus Watch is built on the philosophy that a connected community is a safer community. By strengthening communication between students, staff, and law enforcement, we can proactively address safety concerns before they escalate

How It WorksMain Campus is divided into 23 geographic zones, each grouped by common building usage and location. The program "piggybacks" on the existing Building Coordinator network, using these leaders to act as liaisons between occupants and UNMPD. This structure ensures that safety information flows both ways—keeping the community informed while ensuring their concerns are heard by university leadership.

The Power of PreventionUnlike traditional reactive policing, Campus Watch focuses on prevention and awareness. It encourages "Looking out for one another" and reporting patterns—such as a door frequently left propped open or recurring suspicious activity—that might otherwise go unnoticed.By reporting these minor issues early, we empower UNMPD to adjust patrols and Facilities Management to improve security measures, creating a safer environment for every Lobo.
